All The Light We Cannot see by Anthony Doerr

Of course this is an international best seller, with a collection of awards and rave reviews. But I found it rather ‘meh’.

The story is set immediately before and during World War II. The 2 main characters are a German boy and a French girl. The structure of the novel is a good many very short chapters, sometimes no more than a page. Mostly these chapters tell us alternately the stories of the boy and the girl, so we know that at some point they are going to come together, as indeed they do.

The structure of the book irritated me at first. The stories seemed to take an eternity to get going, and I came close to putting this book aside.

And that’s about it. I didn’t really get the themes of good conquering all in the same way as in, for example, The Book Thief. The short episodes set years after the end of the war (and the main story) added nothing.

5 out of 10.
