Charles Cumming – A Foreign Country, A Colder War, A Divided Spy

A few weeks ago a friend tweeted that she had fallen down a Charles Cumming rabbit hole. I followed her there.

These 3 novels form a trilogy of fast-paced modern spy thrillers. The hero is Thomas Kell, who is in disgrace having been accused of acquiescence in CIA rendition of an afghan suspect. He is brought back in the first 2 books to investigate unusual circumstances – a disappearance and a death. The third book sees him seeking revenge for something that happens in the second. In these books you are never sure who can be trusted, the cold war is reheated, and a 21st century terror plot has to be dealt with.

As I say, fast-paced, and intricately plotted. Although comparisons have been made with Le Carre, there is less of the mental chess that George Smiley plays.

These 3 books made for excellent holiday reading – 2 days each. Overall – 8 out of 10.
