Ed King by David Guterson

I remember reading Snow Falling on Cedars several years ago. Then in February 2012 this must have been one of Amazon’s daily kindle offers, as I see I bought it for 99p.

This is a retelling of the Oedipus story, set in America between 1962 and 2017. It didn’t take me long to realise that Ed King is Oedipus Rex.

The story follows with all the inevitability of a Greek tragedy, which of course the original play by Sophocles was. The narrative drives on grippingly and relentlessly. My interest was held, even though I knew the story and how it would play out.

This is not a long book. I read it in one day, at home feeling unwell. Having enjoyed Snow Falling on Cedars, I shall look out for other books by David Guterson.

9 out of 10.
