Box 88 by Charles Cumming

The latest spy thriller from Charles Cumming, Box 88 concerns a secret organisation within the secret organisations of MI6 and the CIA. It also concerns secret agent Lachlan Kite – dealing with events now and when he was recruited straight out of Eton sorry “Alford” at age 18 (it’s a shame they couldn’t have done this to Cameron, Johnson and Rees-Mogg). As often happens, in his present ‘Lockie’ has to confront his past.

The past features sex and drugs and some rock and roll, and a precocious 18 year old spy in the making. The present is very present, with a number of references that people may not get in a few years’ time such as the code names Eve and Villanelle given by one of the spymasters.

As with Cumming’s previous books, Box 88 is very easy to read. 480 pages took me 3 days.

I have ordered the next in the series, but am a little uncertain about this book. Is it more than the making of Lachlan Kite?

For that reason, 7 out of 10.
